Disney is a Drag!

Aloha my wonderful merfolk,

Recently, I have been obsessed with RuPaul’s drag race. The effort these Queens go to is amazing and a lot of the time, I forgot that they most of them, were indeed men dressed as women. This got me to thinking; with Ursula the sea witch being based off Harris Glenn Milstead’s character Divine, do some drag queens use Disney characters as inspiration for their costume design. A simple Google search led me not to this answer exactly, but to a digital artist that used both Disney characters and Queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race as inspiration for his art.

This digital artist is known as  Justin, or dezignjk on DeviantArt and his designs are simply glorious; taking what I can only assume are his favourite Queens from the first four seasons and turning them into Disney villains.

Lady Tremaine x Chad Michaels

The first digital illustration is of Chad Michaels, the winner of Drag Allstars season one and runner up of season four of RuPauls Drag Race, as Lady Tremaine; the evil stepmother from Cinderella. If the name of the Queen was not above this piece then I may not have guessed it straight away as it is a long stretch from Chad Michel’s many Cher impersonations. Still, this is a fantastic piece of art.

Queen of Hearts x Jiggly Caliente

This Queen I guessed straight away. This is Jiggly Caliente who was a participant in the fourth season of RuPauls Drag Race. The addition of the lollipop, which has become one of Jiggly’s trademarks, and the fact is a heart shape, makes this an excellent interpretation of the Queen of Hearts.

Latrice Royale x Ursula

Latrice Royale as Ursual is an extremely good choice. During season four of RuPauls drag race, Latrice created a look that included a black wig with blue tentacles and crystals placed around the head. She also had dramatic blue eye make-up which included many more crystals. It is this outfit design that I blieve makes this choice, one of the best.

Manila Luzon x Cruella Deville

The second design that is spot on comes in the form of Manila Luzon in the form of Cruella Deville. What makes this even more perfect is that the Shi-Tzu dogs that she carries in her arms are her fellow competitors, the Heathers; aka Raja, Delta Work and Carmen Carrera. These four would dominate season 3 of RuPauls drag race.

Raven x Queen Grimhilde

Raven was a Queen on the second season of RuPauls drag race and was the runner up to Tyra Sanchez. Personally, I think Raven should have won the season, but this was five years ago so I should probably get over it. Raven as the Evil Queen from Snow White works well simply because they are both very straight faced; even when Raven smiles she still looks like she could kill you very easily if she wanted.

Sharon Needles x Maleficent

Sharon Needles works well as Maleficent in my opinion. Sharon was crowned the winner of season four of RuPauls Drag Race. She was known for being kooky and spooky and different to the usual Queens in the drag scene; the main reason I loved her so much. Maleficent is one of my favourite Disney villains and so, this piece of digital art gets a massive thumbs up from me!

Yara Sofia x Yzma

The final digital drawing is of Yara Sofia as Yzma from The Emperors New Groove. Yara was a contestant in the third season of RuPauls Drag Race and is one of the many Queens to represent Puerto Rico. Yara came fourth place but was given the award of Miss Congeniality at the Drag Race season 3 Reunion. Yara as Yzma works well, however if the name of the Queen has not been below the drawing, I would not have known who this was. Sorry Justin!

Are you a fan of RuPauls drag race? Are you a fan of these types of Disney inspired art? Or do you wish people would leave Disney as Disney?
