Aloha my wonderful merfolk,
I personally, always enjoy it when artists take Disney characters as a concept and place them into a different scenario or include them in a different fandom (within reason of course). An example of this I came across not too long ago is the art work of Isaiah Stephens. He has many collections where he has put Disney characters into different costumes; Hallowe’en costumes if you will. I thought I would write a few blog posts on his four collections, putting all of the art pieces in one place for your convenience.
The first collection I shall be discussing is his princess collection.
Okay, the first Princess in Isaiah’s collection is my favourite Little Mermaid. Ariel fits the look of Black Widow due to her flaming red hair but overall, does not have many of the same qualities that Black Widow possesses. I love Black Widow and of course Ariel is my favourite princess, therefore I give this design two thumbs up regardless!
Princess Aurora as the Mother of Dragons, Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones. I love the mini Maleficent dragon on Aurora’s arm, such a cute little addition to the costume!
Anyone who knows me well enough will know that Harry Potter also holds a very dear place in my heart and therefore I adore this picture of Belle as Hermione Granger. Both Belle and Hermione are very bookish; the best crossover there could have been.
I am going to be 100% honest and admit that I had no idea who Cinderella was dressed as and so, I had to resort to Google. I found out that Cinders is dressed as Annabeth Chase from the Percy Jackson series. I can’t personally comment too much on this character as I am yet to read those books and see the movies. Sorry guys!
Again, this was another character that I was unsure of the name but have seen multiple times. Jasmine is dressed as Chun-Li from Street Fighter, a character I have seen cosplayed many a time by the more big name cosplayers. As I haven’t played Street Fighter I cannot comment on how Jasmines character relates, all I can say is that she looks awesome!
Okay this one I didn’t have to research. Merida is dressed as Rogue from the X-Men comics, series and films. In the televised series’, Rogue was one of my favourite characters (in the live action films not so much). Brave is also one of my favourite Pixar films due to being set in Scotland (I have Scottish ancestry). So for me, this image gets two thumbs up for being a very creative and very awesome Halloween costume visual.
Mulan, the young girl who went to war to spare her father and became a respected warrior, dressed as Xena Warrior Princess. This idea could not have been a more perfect fit in my opinion. I adored Xena as a kid and it was out on television roughly around the time that Mulan was released in the cinema over here in the UK. I think, had they lived in similar time periods, and indeed, the same country, I think Mulan and Xena may have been friends (although may have argued over methods used).
The Hunger Games have become a very popular franchise over the past few years with the release of the movie versions of the novels by Suzanne Collins. I think dressing Pocahontas as Katniss Everdeen was a very good choice; both are known for good survival skills, their nature surroundings and both Katniss and Pocahontas’ tribe use bow and arrows. A Perfect costume match once again in my opinion.
Here we have Rapunzel dressed as Sailor Moon for Halloween with Pascal accompanying her dressed as Luna the cat. Both Rapunzel and Sailor Moon are young girls with a very high energy personality and of course, they both have long blonde hair. This is a good parallel for a Halloween costume and the artistry just looks awesome.
Here we have Snow White dressed as Wonder Woman. Although this art work just reflects the Princesses dressing up as characters from other television or film franchises, I think this one is one of the ones that makes littler sense. Snow White was very quiet and precious, with her soft and high pitched voice. Wonder Woman is an Amazonian warrior that kicks butt. A rather large difference between the two characters. Also, I just can’t get over the sight of seeing Snow in a leotard and knee high boots; there’s something unsettling about it.
The final image in the Princess series is of Tiana dressed as Avatar Korra from Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra. I’ll admit it, this one was another character I had to google as I’ve never watched Avatar or Legend of Korra before; or if I have it was when I was a lot younger. I’m not sure if Tiana and Korra have anything common but putting that to one side, Tiana looks amazing with her water bending powers.
Which of our 11 Princesses do you think has the best costume? Which one do you think could have dressed as something better? Do you enjoy these fandom crossovers or think they should be left well alone?
