Aloha my wonderful merfolk!
It’s Tag Tuesday today! I know it’s been a good few weeks since I did an actual tag but I’ve been having so much fun with my Tuesday Top Fives. More of those are on the way but today, I thought I would do the Alternative Girl Tag. I saw this tag done by Hello Batty and you can see her video for that here.
1. Describe your style
Anything black. I don’t have a specific style as I don’t like limiting myself to certain looks. Also, for certain looks, I don’t have the funds so I just incorporate different bits of different styles into my look. If I like a piece of clothing and it’s black or grey, I will buy it.
2. How did you start wearing different clothes, hair, piercings, etc…
I was 13. I just started high school and had started getting into alternative music. I’d started listening to Green Day, Bullet for my Valentine, Fall Out Boy, as well as 80s metal that my Mam had on CD. I was surrounded by friends who wore skinny jeans, converse etc. There was a place in our local city where al the alternative people would hang out every Saturday. I would go into the alternative clothing stores. It was through musical and personal influences that I started to change my style.
3. Do your parents accept your style
They do. At one point they even offered to buy me all black clothing because I was adamant I wanted to be a Goth. They also let me dye my hair black when I was 13.
4. Have you ever suffered bullying for being different?
With being alternative, comes the abuse from those who are not. In the UK, these small minded pieces of excrement are called chavs and they are horrific! Simple because you listen to different music than them and don’t wear tracksuits and nike airs all day every day, we are freaks. I had ‘Goth’ yelled at me more times then I can remember. I even witnessed one of my friends get beaten up simply for wearing a long black trench coat and having a lip piercing and another got hit over the head with a metal pole because he had long hair. I personally got off lightly when it came to bullying, mainly receiving verbal abuse rather than physical.
5. What was the most outrageous look you’ve ever had?
I’ve never really done anything totally outrageous as I was always too anxious to be different or to stand out from the crowd. Although I look back at my scene phase and cringe a little bit!
6. Do you have or had any tattoos or piercings?
I only have my ears pierced, due to the fact I’m a massive wuss. I’ve put off having my nose done now for about five years. I really want tattoos and love how they look but again, it’s the pain factor because I’m a massive wimp!
7. What would you say to people who are suffering or being judged for the way they look right now?
Let it go over your head. Those that are bullying you or shouting abuse at you are small minded people. You are a wonderful individual who has every right to express how they feel through your clothes, or hair colour, or hair style. It is not of their concern how you dress. You are fabulous. You are wonderful. They are not.
Sometimes it’s hard when you think people are staring or talking/laughing behind your back. If you are just getting into the alternative subcultures and feel self conscious, take baby steps. We were all there at one point but have all managed to come out of our shells and embrace who we are. You will get there, and you will learn how to keep your head up high and be proud of who you are!
I tag Daniela of SpikedBlackTee to do this tag!
