Aloha my wonderful merfolk!
I bring you another Top 5 post. Today, my post is influenced by a Disney Bloggers chat I participated in a few weeks ago. It was held by Mandy of Mandy Jean World and it got me thinking about underrated Disney movies. There are so many fantastic Disney movies out there that don’t get as much love as they should, and it’s awful to see. Some are torn apart by Disney fans when really, they are fantastic pieces of art and entertainment for children, and adults alike.
I am including both animated and live action movies in this Top 5. They are also in no particular order. I feel that with them all being underrated, putting them in some sort of order would be unjustifiable. They’re all fantastic films created by Disney and should be loved equally.
Atlantis: The Lost Empire
I adore Atlantis. If I remember correctly, I went to the cinema to see it and loved it from the first scene. The art style in this movie is incredible. The characters are fantastic. I hate how Kida is overlooked as being a Disney Princess even though she is more of a Princess than Mulan has ever been. I love Mulan by the way, but she isn’t a Princess by blood or marriage. I digress. Atlantis should have a lot more love for it then it does and I love watching it over and over.
Basil The Great Mouse Detective
I’ve loved this film since I was a small child. It always surprised me when I spoke about the movie and people had never heard of it. I love Disney’s take on the stories of Sherlock Holmes and Vincent Price as Ratigan is just amazing. I adore Vincent Price, his voice is amazing to listen to and his song in the movie is fantastic. I can’t believe this movie gets slated. It’s fantastic.
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
I’ve included a live action movie in this blog post because I feel that Bedknobs and Broomsticks is another example of a wonderful hybrid Disney movie. I am a fan of movies set in World War 2 and I love the fact that Eglantine is using her witchcraft to help the war effort. The songs in this movie are catchy and I love the part on the Isle of Naboombu where they play football. Although I’m a massive fan of Mary Poppins, which this film is constantly compared to, I love this film equally and feel like it deserves much more love than it gets. Who doesn’t love an under water scene?
Hunchback of Notre Dame
Beautiful animation. Beautiful music. Fantastic characters. A creepy and terrifying villain. The Hunchback of Notre Dame has everything you could want from a Disney movie. The opening song, Bells of Notre Dame, gives me chills every time and Court of Miracles is such a fun song to sing along to. I love Esmeralda as a character and wish she got a lot more love. I also wish she was out and about in Disneyland Paris more often.
Finally, we have Robin Hood. This was another childhood favourite of mine and I used to watch it all the time. I adore Princes John and Sir Hiss; I remember laughing so hard at them when I was younger. The songs in this movie are brilliant and the end scene is just fantastic and on the edge of your seat action. I love it when Disney take older stories and put their own spin on it.
