The Jungle Book: A Novel vs A Movie

Aloha my wonderful merfolk!

As we all know, novels and movies are completely different mediums. This means that a lot of the time, the movie differs quite a bit from the original novel. When it comes to the Jungle Book, Disney took some of the original material but took a lot of creative liberty when making their version.

Today, I thought I would share the differences between the novel and the Disney animated movie.

  • Rama in the book is actually a bull fro the cattle herd that Mowgli had to drive when he lived in the ma village.
  • Mowgli’s wolf father is just referred to as Father Wolf.
  • It is Father Wolf and Raksha who find Mowgli and not Bagheera.
  • In the book, the wolves play far more of an important role than in the Disney movie.
  • Mowgli also eats meat like his wolf brothers and sisters whereas in the movie he copies Baloos diet.
  • In the book, Bagheera spoils Mowgli ad isn’t as serious as in the Disney film.
  • Shere Kahn dies in the book as he is killed by Mowgli and a herd of cattle.
  • He was also born crippled which is not mentioned in the film.
  • Baloo is a sleepy, serious bear who taught Mowgli the Law of the Jungle.
  • Kaa is one of Mowgli’s close friends who rescues him from the Bander Log and helps fight off the red dogs.
  • Kaa doesn’t hypnotise with his eyes but with a dance that affects everyone but Mowgli.
  • Hathi is a wise ruler of the jungle and not a pompous war elephant.
  • He also has three children in the book and no spouse.
  • in the book, the monkeys have no form of leadership, however in the film, it is shown that they are ruled by King Louie.
  • The vultures are not present in the book.
  • Tabaqui the jackal is featured in the book as Shere Kahns sidekick but is not in the Disney movie.
  • Disney had already created a wolf like character who couldn’t eat the main character in The Sword in the Stone and did not want to repeat this type of character so soon.
  • In the book, it is Mowgli who realises he needs to return to the man village.
  • there is also no girl that lures him to the village.
  • The main female character is a woman named Messua who adopts Mowgli.
