Tom Jones Sings for Royalty

Aloha my wonderful merfolk!

The Emperor’s New Groove is one of the few Disney films where the main characters do not have their own songs. However, during the film, there is one character who does sing. This character is known as Theme Song Guy. Originally, Disney wanted Sting to play this part, however Sting himself felt Disney needed to take a younger direction.

Instead, Disney chose Tom Jones to sing for the movie. Today, I thought I would take a look at Tom Jones and the part he played in this Disney movie.

35. Emperors New Groove

Tom Jones was born Thomas John Woodward in June of 1940 in Pontypridd in Wales. He began singing at an early age and would regularly sing at weddings, family gatherings and was an active member of his school choir.

In 1963, Tom became the frontman of a band called Tommy Scott and the Senators who were a Welsh beat group. They recorded several tracks but had no success with record labels.

Jones got his first record contract with a label called Decca. His first song with the label did not chart, however, his follow up song ‘Its Not Unusual’ became an international hit and is still loved to this day. It reached number 1 in the UK in early 1965 and the top 10 in the United States.

Following this, Jones released ‘What’s New Pussycat?’ for the film of the same name and released the Bond theme for Thunderball. In 1965, Jones met Elvis Presley who apparently sang Jones’ song to him as he walked towards him on set.

Following this, Jones was marketed as a crooner singer in order to stop his career taking a dip with the changing times. IN the 1970’s, Jones youred with female singing groups Quiet Elegance and The Blossoms. His singles during this time included ‘She’s A Lady’ and ‘Say You’ll Stay Until Tomorrow’. The 80s for Jones was his country era but never managed to get a single into the top 40 of the US Country charts.

In 1993, Jones moved to Interscope Records and released ‘If I Only Knew’. Four years later he would release ‘You Can LeaveYour Hat On’ for The Fully Monty.

In 2000, Tom Jones was cast as Theme Song Guy in The Emperor’s New Groove. The song, ‘Perfect World’ was written by Sting but sang by Jones. The Theme Song Guy was only a minor character in the film but is seen singing at the beginning and end of the movie. Theme Song Guy also appeared in The Emperor’s New School but I don’t think Tom Jones reprised his role.

These days, Tom Jones is a coach on the UK talent contest show, The Voice.
